Week 1
For week one of New Media Incubator we looked at what new media is, it's impacts and its purpose. By the end of this module I should be able to be equipped with knowledge and skill to title myself an 'innovative practitioner'. As a first lecture it was quite broad as it was getting us to think about new media as a whole and understand what is expected of us as we start our careers. This lecture allowed me to think of ways of which I can tailor my skills to a specific job while having transferable skills if I wanted to delve into a different career path later. I also gained insight into what my peers were into, by knowing this valuable information I can count on them being a possible contact within the media industry.
As I know what I will be doing career wise after university, it is important for me to learn all the skills that I am unsure of now. Yes, I can create and build a website although I do not know all topics and codes needed to be an expert in this field. For this module I will be improving and learning new web designing skills and incorporating API's and JavaScript more frequently.
In order to look at myself as a true new media worker, I had to look at what skills I have and areas of which need improving. Below is a likert scale looking at where I rate myself to be in a particular skill out of 10.
Behavioural:
Organisation - 3
Planning - 7
Creativity - 7
Team Work - 7
Meeting Deadlines - 9
Time Keeping - 6
Communication - 7
Technical:
CSS - 6
JavaScript - 7
HTML - 6
API - 6
Illustrator - 7
Video Editing -7
Photoshop - 5
Looking at my skills audit it is easy to see where my areas for improvement. This likert scale has also given me the opportunity to deter what I need to do to be successful within this field. My behavioural skills are noticeably higher than my technical skills and shows the difference between who I am as a person and who I am as a professional. From today forward it is time to brush up on my technical skills and start to become more organised.
As a exercise we (as a class) were asked to write down new media technologies on a post it not and to stick it on the cool wall. Cool being things that are not important and hot implying they are.
After sticking them to the wall, we were instructed to research 3 technological examples that we were unfamiliar with. Many of the post-it notes were social media platforms such as Facebook and Snapchat, however since I had to choose topics that I was unfamiliar with I chose to focus on:

- Live Streaming
Live Streaming is a way to broadcast a video, audio or yourself on a social media in order to reach a wide audience. While it can be privatised for friends and family, many choose not to. By doing this the expose who they are to the world, without thinking about the repercussions. There are strangers out, stalking people and 'following' them. As a new media worker live streaming can be seen as a way to broadcast and expose my work and can be used as an employable attribute. Live streaming can also be a way of creating a business for yourself. As a creative individual in the media industry, we all know how hard it is to get your foot in the door. If live streaming is used in the right way it can help build a brand, and with building a brand create followers and consumers.
- Copyright
Copyright can be defined as the legal right given to the owner, whether it'd be through print, publishing, perform, film or musical material. In my development as a new media worker I will be creating and making things of my own and for business purposes. It is important to understand the work being created is original and can not be copied.
- Pintrest
Pintrest is a form of social media. It enables users to share images, plans, guides and DIY's. Pintrest is a place of which creatives can go and be inspired, create mood boards and formulate ideas. As a specialist this form of social media will help me generate ideas, and see what consumers want and creating things that they need.
